MICRO-MESO-MACRO levels

The transition to healthy and sustainable dietary behaviour must operate at 3 embedded levels.

MICRO-LEVEL

MICRO-LEVEL – INDIVIDUALS

Level of dietary behaviours of individual consumers/ households and related:

  • intrapersonal (physiological, psychological, sociodemographic and lifestyle) and
  • interpersonal factors (family, peers, other close social networks).

MESO-LEVEL

MESO-LEVEL – FOOD ENVIRONMENT

Level of social, digital and physical food environments, including both:

  • the practices / mechanisms through which food chain actors shape these environments (e.g. marketing, supply of foods, etc.) and
  • the influences these environments have on dietary patterns (at collective level).

MACRO-LEVEL

MACRO-LEVEL – FOOD SYSTEM

Level of ‘the’ food system, considering its 5 main clusters of drivers:

  • biophysical and environmental
  • innovation technology and infrastructure
  • political, economic and commercial
  • socio-cultural
  • demographic

and corresponding key leverage points.
