Major PLAN’EAT milestone on 8 January 2026

On 8 January 2026, PLAN’EAT will reach an important milestone in its journey toward more sustainable and transparent food systems. Our partner TMG – Think Tank for Sustainability will officially launch the True Costs of Food Database, a groundbreaking new open-access resource that brings True Cost Accounting (TCA) into the heart of food system transformation.

Food prices rarely reflect their full impact on people and the planet. Environmental degradation, climate impacts, and social costs often remain hidden from consumers, policymakers, and businesses alike. The True Costs of Food Database aims to change that. Developed by TMG in collaboration with True Price, this database is the first open-access tool applying a True Cost Accounting approach to more than 2,000 food products. These products are consumed in the EU and sourced from 81 countries worldwide, offering an unprecedented level of detail and comparability across food systems.

Launch event

To mark this milestone, TMG is hosting an online launch event:

    • FiBL Switzerland

Together, the speakers will explore the opportunities, challenges, and future directions of True Cost Accounting in transforming food systems.

Advancing true cost accounting within PLAN’EAT

This launch reflects the growing momentum of True Cost Accounting within PLAN’EAT and beyond. By integrating robust data and transparent methodologies, TCA is becoming an increasingly powerful tool to support healthier diets, fairer livelihoods, and more resilient ecosystems.

We are proud to see this progress unfold with our partners and look forward to the impact this database will have on research, policy, and practice across Europe and globally.
